It’s the unexpected that fascinates us, letting our curiosity grow stronger than the urge for safety and control. The magic of new encounters and unplanned turnarounds helps us switch off the autopilot of everyday life and grants us an unbiased, curious glimpse at ourselves and the world around us. In these brief moments we accept the chaos surrounding us, allow ourselves to embrace it and see the beauty of it.

This delightful chaos is the vibrant fabric woven into “Pleasant Clutter”, the debut album of Vienna-based DJ and producer B.Visible. With an endless love for detail, he masterfully condenses familiar and strange sounds into a fascinating collection of moments, each one in itself as beautiful as volatile – again and again you find yourself wanting to hold on to something you’ve only just grown fond of, yearning to stay just a little longer. Leaving space for the unexpected, the album bit by bit reveals the beauty that lies in the harmony of the whole.

Using playful little melodies and decontextualized fragments of sounds, B.Visible conjures up a wide range of moods and emotions: he tells mesmerizing instrumental stories full of unexpected twists and turns, evoking lively images within the mind. In constant flux between weightlessness and dead-aim beats, structures are being broken up and put back together on the fly – always changing, always evolving.

Change as a constant and the symbiosis of contrasting elements are omnipresent on “Pleasant Clutter”, and beyond that. Running through the entire work of B.Visible, these stylistic devices have shaped the musician’s creative output over the years, and this distinctive sound has long become his trademark. Colorful illustrations by Viennese artist Daniel Triendl complement the music and add a visual dimension to the album, making the project’s intentions visually accessible.

SONIC RESISTANCE. A Compilation For Rojava.

This is a call for maintaining the international solidarity with the revolution in Rojava. It is a musical interference against the imperialist war machinery, against capitalism. It is campaigning to raise awareness about the struggle of the Kurdish freedom movement.

This compilation of 90 tracks was put together to support the feminist movement in the autonomous area of Northern Syria. All proceeds from the digital sales will be sent directly to the ‘Foundation of the Free Woman in Rojava‘ (Weqfa Jina Azad A Rojava) which is one of the last women’s organization in the area.

Rojava established itself not only in opposition to the Turkish military regime, but also as a grassroots movement redefining the future of the region on its own terms. The Kurdish resistance is advocating for women’s equality, LGBTQIA rights, ecology, sustainability, and dem...

MAGHREB K7 CLUB – Synth Raï, Chaoui & Staifi 1985-1997 (ENG)

Most of Lyon’s musical scene is composed of men originating from eastern Algeria, but since the 1950s, the Croix-Rousse and Guillotière cafés have counted musicians from all over Maghreb. These cafés were social hubs, where these individuals met up weekly, playing together and sharing their everyday life experience —but they also had a major role in the development of popular music of French-based North Africans. In Lyon, Le But Café in the 3rd arrondissement or the bars on Sébastien Gryphe Street in the 7th arrondissement were among these: one could conduct business there, getting booked for a wedding, a baptism, a gala, or a studio session... all took place there.

Playing together in Lyon. The practice of music was cross-regional with different North African influences, but also with local traditions. These versatile musicians also absorbed new local influences: music within the context of immigra- tion was a perfect school for musical cosmopolitanism. Chachacha or tango versions of some Cheikh El Hasnaoui tracks come to mind, or Mohamed Mazouni’s jerks and twists. Like their predecessors, the musicians in this compilation brilliantly integrate raï or staïfi tunes with disco aesthetics or funk guitar riffs as Nordine Staifi did. You could also think of Salah El Annabi who used the “ Oxygene ” theme (1976) by Jean-Michel Jarre, the Lyon-based composer and electronic music pioneer. “As we say around here, mixed weddings make good-looking lads!” said Abbès Hamou, a musician from Place du Pont. Following on from their musical traditions and unrestrained inventiveness, the musicians’ repertoire naturally assimilated their era’s aesthetics and technologies.

A Lyon, l’essentiel de la population musicienne est constituée d’hommes, provenant de l’Est algérien. Mais depuis les années 1950, les cafés des pentes de la Croix-Rousse ou de la Guillotière brassent des musiciens de tout le Maghreb. Dans l’épaisseur de la fumée des cigarettes, ils se côtoient et se retrouvent pour jouer ensemble et partager les expériences du quotidien. Espaces de sociabilité incontournables pour les immigrés, ces cafés ont eut un rôle fondamental pour les musiques populaires des maghrébins de France. À Lyon, le bar Le But, dans le 3e, ou ceux de la rue Sébastien Gryphe, dans le 7e, étaient de ceux-là — des lieux aussi intéressants pour les affaires: on s’y faisait aussi engager pour un mariage, un baptême, un gala... ou une session d’enregistrement.

Jouer ensemble à Lyon. Car la pratique de la musique y est transrégionale: entre les différents pays du Maghreb, mais aussi entre les différentes traditions régionales. Polyvalents, les musiciens assimilent, en plus, les influences rencontrées sur place. La musique en situation d’immigration, c’est une école de cosmopolitisme musical ! On pense déjà aux agréments chachacha ou tango de certains titres de Cheikh El Hasnaoui, ou aux jerks et aux twists de Mohamed Mazouni. Marching forth from ‘White On White’ (2018), which saw Willis turn cues from overlooked British Constructivist artist Marlow Moss into angular electronic minimalism, ‘FMJ’ finds him rendering grimy rhythmic shrapnel and tense, lysergic atmospheres from processed samples of Abigail Mead’s original score for ‘Full Metal Jacket’. Broadly eschewing the film’s classic rock ’n roll cuts and marching songs, Willis highlights its deeply chilling undertones of dread and paranoia, focussing in particular on the accompaniment to key scenes in the suicide of ‘Leonard’, the bullied cannon fodder; the squadron’s recce of ’Ruins’; and the death of the female VC sniper.

Using a hefty arsenal of vintage hardware including PPG Wave synth/sampler, Emulator II, SP1200 and Prophet 5 to paint stark sonic imagery, Willis acutely acknowledges the film’s integral but perhaps overlooked input from Abigail Mead, a.k.a. Stanley Kubrick’s daughter Vivian Kubrick, whose Fairlight CMI compositions coloured the film’s most pivotal moments. Through interpolation and sampling, Willis deftly unpackages these moments to evoke a heavily present sense of impending brutality that’s alleviated occasionally by passages of sharp, glassy rhythm hinting at the film’s humid South East Asian location and febrile, dreamlike sense of duality and cinematic fantasia.

In step with a stellar run of Ecstatic releases including Novo Line’s imaginary fusion of the ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ and ‘To Live and Shave in LA’ soundtracks (‘To Qatsi And Die in LA’ [E041, 2019]), Abul Mogard’s ‘Kimberlin’ soundtrack, or Not Waving’s ‘Futuro’; Primitive World’s ‘FMJ’ is another immersive addition to the label’s now signature strain of impressionistic, imaginative musical storytelling.
