Cette semaine, ça y est, on en voit le bout. Du moins, dans nos esprits échauffés par les premiers rayons printaniers. Pour célébrer cette perspective, et même si au fond on ne sait rien de ce qui nous attend vraiment, Le Secret a donné carte blanche à Julien, boss du magasin Corner Records et cofondateur du label Rebirth On Wax. Au menu, deux heures de mixtape avec un seul leitmotiv : « Déconfinement total ! ». Et sur le papier comme dans les oreilles, le pari est réussi. Julien vous propose ainsi un panorama sonore jouissif, coloré et dansant, entièrement concocté sur vinyle qui vous fera faire le tour du bassin méditerranéen, descendra en Afrique Noire avant de vous entraîner aux Antilles puis dans les contrées Australes. Valentina Magaletti and Julian Sartorius maintain a dialogue of irregular tempos and off-kilter percussion on their first collaborative record titled Sulla Pelle.

Valentina is a force in the world of electronic and experimental music - working with Tom Relleen under Tomaga, jazz/pop band Vanishing Twin, the collective ‘UUUU’ with a couple of releases on Editions Mego, as well as various collaborations with the likes of Nicolas Jaar and Raime/Moin to name a couple.

Julian Sartorius is a denizen in and of the beat – he's collaborated with artists such as Matthew Herbert, Shahzad Ismaily, Sylvie Courvoisier, as well as touring worldwide and widely through Europe with his solo show on the bill with the likes of Deerhoof, Faust, and Jaki Liebezeit. It’s apparent that time is not perceived in an ordinary manner by Julian – he's released a “Beat Diary” consisting of 365 beats and, on a daily basis, adds an element to his collage and modifies an 8-second audioloop under the project called Morph. More recently, he played percussion on the track ‘Firesmoke‘ on Kate Tempest‘s new record ‘The Book of Traps and Lessons‘.

Sulla Pelle chisels away at your headspace at varying velocities with a harmonious flow - at times gently carving out channels that dramatically flood with syncopated kick drums and shifting propulsive beats. It’s as much about monotonous playing as it is about those moments where it seems as though every vertebra branches into tentacles and antennas ricocheting hits in foreign symbiosis.

Rasping prepared drums that traverse the body into all sorts of ceremonial throttles, hedonistic arm flails, primal cheer at every incipient dynamic accent. This raw and sparse drumming and percussion record sees Valentina and Julian cueing each other in on interlocked ratchets and clanks with different mallets and metalwork from Malcom Catto’s studio on top of modular tinkering and occasional distant subdued ramblings.

Sulla Pelle will be released end of August digitally and on vinyl with artwork by Benjamin Kilchhofer.

"This album was made using the last note of many existing tracks as the only audio material.
Original tracks were picked at random on a hard drive and include a variety of styles, authors and ages.
It's not always easy to determine what "last note" means, most of the time I considered it to be the last sound intentionally produced by a musician.
In some cases extracts were slightly extended to the last chord, pattern, and anything behind that point (applause, cracks, etc).
For a fade-out, I would amplify the gain until I could isolate the last audible note.
All the samples selected that way were used at some point, there were no leftovers.
I was allowed to crop, pitch, reverse those samples and run them through basic effects (eq, delai, etc).
The final pieces were composed between 2015 and 2018.

Morusque

In Ken Liu's novel Nova verba, mundus novus, a ship reaches the edge of the Earth and as it begins its fall across the world, the crew, seeing their language skills vanish into thin air, sets a new standard of communication.

the end of music can be experienced as this adventure towards a reconstruction of the signifier. It shares with the early compositions of Amon Tobin a deep sense of letting the samples breath and drive them in a totally different horizon at the same time. Reflecting the huge mess of our contemporary hard drives, the project takes us on a journey through church organ, glitch music, chiptune, dada songs and more.

In the manner of an “ouvroir de musique potentielle” (workshop of potential music), Morusque defines a system that reverses the latent entropy of a last note. Our odyssey begins then with the end and ends with the void. In between, the listener is free to invent a narrative based on these acoustic images that reveal an illusory but strangely palpable second nature.

Morusque's work seeks imaginary solutions in compliance with a scientific method. Digging in his website nurykabe.com is like to visit a museum of everyday objects. Through music, graphic arts and video games, he brings the technological taboo of banality to light without trying to sublimate it at all costs.
