There is an endless abundance of variations that the clarinet can use in changing the colour of a single note. As a privileged listener - and - experiencer, Ben Bertrand through his favourite instrument shared the musical blueprints with me, which resulted in this album. His music has become a vivid part of my almost daily thoughts - allowing what I hear to clash and sing with the patterns and rhythms already established in my mind. A voluntary trip, an absorbing experience in our Brussels vibrant cultural life. With his instrument and countless machines, Ben creates a web of sounds that are hard to pin down but easy to absorb as a whole. Ben Bertrand happened to me. His music, full of beauty, is good to listen to and pleasant to follow. A sense and perception of continued growth too illuminated and overwhelming to resist. While I sense when a new composition is coming, Ben was able in our daily conversations, to progressively untangle a musical mystery and layout the puzzle of a new creation. Listening to his music is like sitting at the sea, watching a slow motion of our crazy life sailing by. You, as a listener, with this record stepped in an early stage of his career, with hardly any involvement of other people, composition wise. Besides composing alone, there have been countless hours when Ben Bertrand worked and interacted with Christophe Albertijn for the recordings. There is also the essence of our regular exchanges and the visions we knit. These are in my opinion just the starting points of plural interactions and musical endeavours to be. It is a matter of his artistic trust and let go, while Ben creates his own language, package and macrocosm. The excellence of Ben Bertrand's music lays in its involving and easily accessible nature, regardless of your personal or musical past experience. Ben Bertrand is all before you for you to dig, and nobody is asking you to file him away under any category.

Alessandro: “No one can tell for sure that a sound of love actually exists, but love and any other emotion can be reverberated by some musical colors always capable to make emotions resounding here and there during a song, ten songs, a thousand ones...”

The second to last decade of the 20th century was flourishing in its full glory with uncompromising decisions and emergence of new genres to experiment with. Several years before the boom of the 80s is when Alessandro Pizzin got involved with the creation of RUINS and was later joined by Piergiuseppe Ciranna in the fluctuating group constitution. After several alterations in the group it didn’t take long until their duo came together in an attempt to make the first wave twist towards experimenting with electronic sounds. In the frame of the birthtime of many new branches of musical subdivision, the artists fused their intentions and virtuosity to base the centerpiece of their prospective electro sound.

Piergiuseppe: “A characteristic of our music has always been that of moving transversely: from intense emotions to whimsical visions”

In a musical conversation between Piergiuseppe and Alessandro, the productions resulted in a relentless manifestation of a variety of contrasting musical colors. Springing from beneath sinister notes and arpeggiating chords to groundless joy and quirky noises. All of it encompassing the perpetual movement and shift of feelings and positions. Obscurity reflecting the anecdotal nature of life.

Alessandro: “I think that we both were keen on listening to all kinds of music, therefore our sound was the result of all these different listenings and concepts blended with new technology products and equipments we were used to experimenting with”

The ranging melodic palette within the compositions, is riddled with external influences manifested in the web of atmospheric scales. Mirroring a plethora of emotions, even though produced quite the while ago, this collection of compositions will undeniably have something to resonate with and object to. Conflicting love, uninhibited anger, driving passion, young maximalism, childlike cynicism. The joy of human existence is inescapably accompanied by utter suffering, taking turns between each other.

Piergiuseppe: “Artistic works, and even songs, should be by definition ineffable, giving suggestions that everyone must then frame and interpret even according to their own experience…”

The path into the light seems dark, the road forward seems to go back. The greatest love seems indifferent, the greatest wisdom seems childish. Each is up to their own interpretation of the songs assembled in this Valentine’s Day speciality. The contradictions perfectly balancing each other out will not leave anyone indifferent. After all, there would be no love without hate.

Pleased to announced the new release, coming from our favourite Filmmaker sharing some mythical and magical sounds.

Dystopian panoramas have been a recurrent panorama on Filmmaker’s tracks and for this work the direction focused on some core elements like the entropy and chaos magic to bring a musical tribute to the goddess Eris. Filmmaker’s birth name, Faunes (derived from Faunus) has surrounded his life with inspiration from greco-roman mythology so all the energy put on ‘Discordian Disco’ is fed by the multicontextual universe and synchronicities that shaped it into a memorable tape.

During the days off his touring in New Zealand, Faunes stayed in Wellington, city where these 10 tracks were recorded using his Deluge, motivated by how the other artists on this tour developed various uses and styles for this instrument also crafted in that land. The result is a collection of wave grooves and lo-fi creamed melodies which also included a special collaboration with the Belgian producer Naomie Klaus (ex Laura Palmer) on the track ‘Golden Apple’ where she delivered both male and female vocals with lynchian tones and tribal vibes. Besides the symbolism of this release, Filmmaker wants to dedicate this album to his most eclectic listeners for highlighting the soul reflected on the music since the beginning. Discordian Disco aims to cause a unique remembrance on the auditory memory of anyone who listens to it from start to finish as is the last Filmmaker’s full-length on this 2020.

Cette semaine, Le Secret vous propose la première summertape de 2020 intitulée « JAM ! ». Au cours de la dixième saison, nous avons ainsi régulièrement évoqué cette tendance dans les musiques électroniques à se passer de l’ordinateur en revenant à des prises live et à « jammer » autour de boites à rythmes, de synthétiseurs, de pédales d’effets etc. Le geste retrouve ainsi peu à peu sa place. Et si cette approche peut sonner parfois de façon moins précise, plus brute, elle gagne en dynamisme, et peut devenir étrangement organique. Ce mix tente donc de dresser un panorama de cette pratique autour d’une sélection d’enregistrements patiemment sélectionnés et mixés par nos soins. C’est l’été, c’est JAM ! Et c’est dans Le Secret.

"Sounds like vintage electronica, looks like vintage electronica..."

Ten years ago I began to upload the musical archive I had produced during my teenage years in the 1980’s… A time when electronic music - which only a decade before had been thought of as difficult, abstract and unbeautiful - had become an essential and ubiquitous element of western popular culture. Electronic behemoths once prodded and poked only by serious electrical engineers were now tamed and scaled to a more manageable size - gadgets that could be cajoled into producing music, noise and rhythms that would soon soundtrack an entire generation.

Through on-line forums and feedback from my uploads I was delighted to discover so many other teenage dreamers who were happy to allow their work to be showcased on what became known as the Bedroom Cassette Masters series. Volume One was published on-line in December 2012 and over the next five years I curated a further eight compilations, eventually allowing work from contemporary artists who were diligently adhering to 1980’s workflows alongside the authentic, true-vintage finds.

Producing the pdf guidebook that came with each volume became a huge undertaking: interviews with artists, features on hardware, sifting through thousands of pages of artefacts from the time when all this electronica was bursting forth. Flattering emails, laudatory reviews and amazing support and energy from creative friends gave me the energy to keep on going.

Life eventually got in the way, but today - in 2020 - the strange times we find ourselves living through have given me the time to finally pull everything together once more before I devote my time and energies to other ventures. The BCM series will remain online for posterity as an entertainment, as a resource and as a testament to the many artists who created all manner of electronic music - both beautiful and ugly - in their bedrooms so long ago.

Cette semaine, Le Secret célèbre l’été à Loriengeles et la sélection s’en ressent. Toujours cette fichue envie de bouger, toujours ce fil rouge courant le long de l'estuaire de l’Avon, et toujours un soin particulier à vous faire voyager. Sans oublier ces choix sans doute plus exigeants en termes d’écoute, plus intimes aussi en dernière partie d’émission. Et puis, pour commencer, ces guitares électriques comme on sait les accorder depuis déjà deux générations du côté d’Angers. Ambiance tropico coco en Bretagne Sud, c’est dans Le Secret !

Une grande envie de bouger traverse également la sélection, à la recherche du tube de l’été comme du dancefloor susceptible de l’accueillir. The legendary album from 1984 for the first time available on vinyl and as download. Fully remastered by David Cunningham. These recordings were originally released on cassette by Touch in 1984 with the exception of 'Parts Of My Body', released on a single by Canal Records in 1979.

'The atmosphere which General Strike conjure together suits an old fashioned, cold war-ish scenario of technology. Their 'Interplanetary Music' is the space pop of George Pal and 'The Day The Earth Stood Still', of computers built like Blackpool Tower in order to struggle through simple trigonometry, of 'The Jetsons' and I.G.Y. They go no further than Expo 67, the world's last gasp of optimism. And although there are dark and disquieting moods set in this mosaic which their listeners have pieced together, it is made with a humour which is true to the spirit of adventure which those references apply. The sanitation merchants who make up most of the world's record-makers today would forbid our ears from hearing these strangely electric keyboards, earthworked textures, bizarre chatterings of percussion, and voices that seem like puzzled robots. Cataloguing the sound in that way makes it all seem a bit of a joke, but it isn't: laughter is encouraged, but it's serious music, made with a great deal more serious spirit than the great and disheartening mountain of music which today implores you to hear and not listen.'

Berlin's veteran mad scientist of discarded MIDI Hi-Tech, Novo Line's Nat Fowler arrives on Protofuture for a special collaboration with Cocktail d'Amore resident DJs Dama (tracks selection) and Trent (mixing/mastering), combining their unique voices in electronic dance music for a choose-your-own-adventure of club transgressions.
"Racconti" – a concept album on cassette recounting those extended stays at our favorite overnight establishments in Berlin, Brescia, and beyond – takes Novo Line's hauntingly disorienting yet danceable polyrhythms and three-dimensional harmonies through ‘Late Night’ (blue side) to ‘Early Morning’ (yellow side), echoing the sounds from within the dark cold walls of an industrial cellar to the outside garden terrace, as the morning's blau stunde makes itself known. Birthed and bred between the three during the COVID-19 lockdown in their lingua franca of Italian, "Racconti" (translated best as "Stories" alluding to those brief life-excerpts compulsively shared on social media) recounts a prototypical night when we commit to entering that club full of friends, temptations, and an open schedule for the next day(s).

Each side of this peculiar bi-colored cassette takes on the persona of a moment in club life: dropping first into the club with "La birretta," the first small beer of the night, confounding and disorienting synth riffs and a slug of brew orient our narrator to the night's vibe; “Sudore" (sweat) gets the album's rave on, as drum and orchestral string hits put the room's bodies into unison; “Il Deca nel Calzino" (10 in the sock) doles out an uncanny valley of automated extended drum solos, colliding into each other like a Max Roach-composed Drum&Bass DJ set. Crossing the blood-brain barrier between the late night and early morning, "Aurora" envelops Led Zepellin's Stairway to Heaven into an adrenaline-inducing chillout track, while the days first sun rays hit faces already wearing sunglasses for hours, and a euphoric highlight of any night out is when you've lost most of your consciousness and become the "Rimastone del Sub," the person with a veritable close-contact, symbiotic relationship with the dancefloor's subwoofer, painted by the album's psychedelic tangent of spastic horns and off-kilter drum crescendos… ask any Brescian for their own interpretation of the rest of the titles and you're sure to relate and get a good laugh.

Combined with the instincts of the ambassadors of dance music Made in Brescia, Novo Line’s “Racconti” will have you flipping between the yellow side and blue side for your own twisted, homebound interpretations of club debaucheries.
