C’est donc le combo Nihiloxica basé à Kampala / Ouganda qui sera à l’honneur avec sa mixture explosive de polyrythmie propulsée par les musiciens du Nilotika Cultural Ensemble et de synthés analogiques bruitistes des anglais PQ and Spooky-J. Le morceau s’appelle «Black kaveera » et est extrait de leur premier album Kaloli, publié chez Crammed Discs. Avec le Vaudou Ale de Chouk Bwa & The Angströmers, c’est déjà l’un de nos favoris de 2020.

This new release raises a question: how does the contemporary musician interact with nature ? Francesco Covarino's answer in Luce/Mantello may be close to the notion of meshing that Timothy Morton develops in The Ecological Thought. Here, Nature is neither fantasised nor put on a pedestal. The drummer is inscribed in the completeness of the great web of living things as a foreign but inseparable element of its environment.

In this cassette, Francesco Covarino combines field recordings and drum solo without emphasizing one more than the other. Luce captures the intrinsic dynamism of the soundscape at two moments of the day. A bird song, the engine of a car, the wind's breath harmonise with the crackling of metallic percussion at midday, then the sound environment blends in with the ample signals of the low tom at dusk.

As for Mantello, the musician proposes a preliminary terraforming of the field recordings. His hands become the anonymous vectors of the swirling ground and the cracking bark of an old tree. Five months after these recordings, the drum parts came into play. The care given to the phrasing allows each keystroke to create a transitory space to echo neighbouring musical events.

Francesco Covarino is a sound artist and drummer based in the province of Perugia in central Italy. Founder of the label tsss tapes, his search for the multiple sounds of silence continues through the publishing of artists from various horizons who share with him this awareness of the interstice of murmurs.

Five o'clock Traffic electronic artist, making music on synthesizers and drum machines. The music has been released on swedish labels such as Borft records, UFO Mongo, RÃ¥synth i Blekinge, Skiboy.

It is said that an artist biography, ideally, should be in line with the aesthetic and general ouevre of the subject. If to be taken seriously, the artist and their respective profile must both retain a refined and elegant sensibility, free from common jargon, extravagant descriptors, enigmatical vocabulary and superfluous constituents. The biography’s author must take caution to avoid common pitfalls of banal prose in order to accentuate and compliment the most unique, vital and overarching themes of the artist's work as well as personal affects. Furthermore, it should go without saying, any indecent or lewd traits that might be discovered in the subject's personal affairs must be omitted from the content, unless, and only unless, said traits are in direct alignment with, and stand to elevate the artist's work.

Conforming to the aforementioned guidelines, it may be said that Jonah Mociun, oftentimes known as Whatever Your Heart Desires, Th' Mole, DJ 0.000001, or Jonah Brown, the purveyor of the collected works entitled Motion Recordings, is a lyricist, composer, vocalist, and electronic music performance artist. Having produced public works reaching as far back as the late 20th century, a vast catalog of solo works has been amassed as well as numerous collaborative projects including such distinguished names as The Rammellzee, David Liebe Hart, Kool Keith, Paul Barman and Myka 9.

Alternatively, and not advised for the true professional, an artist may take a more casual approach, presenting themselves in the first person rather than the third, ideally developing a sense of friendly rapport with the reader. This may be something of a double-edged sword, however, in that it will normally undermine any sense of exaltedness or mystique that a third-person account may more likely provide. With this understanding, Mr. Mociun has thrown caution to the wind and burdened us with his own biography, presented thusly:

Hi, I’m Jonah. I like to make music. I’ve been doing it for a long time under a bunch of different names, which is probably not the best idea for a music career. I don’t think I’ve ever worked as long or hard on an album as I have with this one. I consider it my best work! I don’t know what to call this music. I like to call it “jazz” but that’s probably not how anyone else would describe it. It started as an attempt at footwork/juke, especially influenced by Japanese forms of it, but it morphed into something different. I think, for the most part, it retains the uptempo complexity of that genre but it’s really a mix of influences. Thematically the Whatever Your Heart Desires project is about time speeding up, what some have referred to as the singularity, the big crunch, or the apocalypse. It’s about how, in this time where things are very chaotic, mixed-up and quickly fluctuating, there is more potential than ever for new inventions and concepts to take shape. Anyway, it’s the first WYHD album, following three EPs. I hope this bio is effective in making you care more about my music…

Nearly a decade since his passing, the works of infamous graffiti artist, sculptor, rapper, and self-described “gothic futurist” Rammellzee continue to push the boundaries of visual art, music and metaphysical thought. Recorded mostly in 2006 and 2007 with producer/composer Jonah “Th' Mole” Mociun, the album Cosmic Flush is finally being released in full for the first time, courtesy of Holland-based label Hecticrecs, on cassette and digital at Hecticrecs.com and elsewhere.

Instrumental in the ’70s and ’80s NYC graffiti scenes, Rammellzee's work was backed by a philosophy based in math, linguistics and quantum mechanics. Amongst other theories, he put forth the idea that the stylized letters spray-painted on subway cars amounted to a weaponized language, propelled through time and space by the motion of the trains. Likewise, even after death, his multifaceted output barrels onwards, furthering its arcane purpose. From recent gallery exhibitions and video documentaries to various other homages, Rammellzee lives on, shaping future generations, even going so far as to inspire the UK-based Cult Of Rammellzee, a vastly-numbered performance group dedicated to spreading awareness of his art and conceptualizations.

The latest manifestation of Rammellzee lies in his final and arguably best-realized album, Cosmic Flush, a high-impact, hyper-speed juggernaut of abstract rap poetics and futuristic beats. “He told me he wanted to make death metal hip hop,” says the album's producer and music composer Jonah Mociun, AKA Th' Mole (among many other aliases). “And he kept saying to double the speed of his vocals and my beats.” While Rammellzee's musical legacy has been centered around the 1983 single “Beat Bop” produced by famed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the old school hip hop sound was never his preferred genre, with his subsequent musical endeavors being more experimental and abrasive in nature. According to Mociun, even the various far out works produced by the Death Comet Crew (including the acclaimed Bi-Conicals Of The Rammellzee album) were not exactly to Rammellzee's taste, but ostensibly Cosmic Flush comes closest to hitting the mark.

“He sent me his vocals on these mini cassettes from a hand-help tape recorder.” says Mociun. “He'd approve my beats first but then he said he'd just be listening to death metal while recording himself ‘in the toilet.’” Though the two never met face to face, with Mociun living in New Orleans and Northern California, they spoke frequently on the phone. “He'd explain the lyrics to me, and some of his mythologies. He talked a lot about linguistics, the cosmic flush concept, Alpha's Bet, and all this stuff that was mostly over my head to be honest. I feel like I'm still gradually figuring out what he meant by some of that stuff.”

Rammellzee died in 2010, shortly after the album's completion, halting any plans for a release. Now, about a decade later, after some partial leaks and unmastered 12-inch singles, the album is finally here in full form. And so, despite biological complications, the legacy and vision of one of history’s most revolutionary artists and thinkers blasts further into the future.

Le festival n’aura malheureusement pas pu fêter son dixième anniversaire. Mais qu'à cela ne tienne, un projet de compilation regroupant tous les artistes ayant joué depuis 2010 a été lancé et bonne surprise : celle-ci regroupe plus de 90 morceaux, d’un éclectisme reflétant bien le festival / label ainsi que son évolution.
De la musique mécanique de Pierre Bastien, présent dès la première année, à la musique cyberpunk de KK NULL, dont la cassette est notre dernière sortie, des scènes et styles divers et variés sont ainsi représentés : rock psychédélique,post punk, musique improvisée, concrète ou industrielle, synthwave, IDM, rave, noise, rap, électro…
Pionniers et jeune garde se croisent, comme d’habitude, dans une fête gigantesque et généreuse, telle une famille de mutants dadaïstes.

In this strange year's ending, and to ward off the curse, Serendip Lab offers you a nice Christmas gift !

Unfortunately for his 10th birthday the festival did not happen this year. Nevermind, a compilation project with all invited artists since 2010 was born and what a good surprise people did answer the call : more than 90 tracks, reflecting the festival / label eclecticism and its evolution.
From Pierre Bastien's mechanical music, present for the first year, to KK NULL's cyberpunk, whose cassette was our last release, very diverse scenes and styles are represented : psychedelic rock, post punk, improvised, concrete, industrial or rave music, synthwave, IDM, noise, rap, électro…
Pioneers or new comers are mixed, as usual, in a huge and generous party, like a big dadaist mutant family.

So thanks a lot to the hundreds of artists who have participate to the adventure since all these amazing years, to the friends, volunteers, a lot of love to the artists in this compilation, and even more to Patrice Curtillat for the mastering, and Jean Turner for the artwork, and at last a stream of love to you all, hope to meet you soon, best wishes !
