It's curious to see how along the way artists and labels appear and disappear from the music scene for no apparent reason.
New arrivals are filled with hope and ingenuity, they often appear as a continuation of other more established offerings and sometimes they surprise us with something completely new that attracts a lot of attention.

What always leaves us a little disheartened is when a musician or label with a wealth of experience and that has given us so much joy suddenly ceases its activities and enters what we believe to be a state of hibernation, or simply stops publishing forever.
What always comes to mind is,
"Why?"

In the last email I shared with Calum, this came up regarding the wonderful label he ran (Conditional). The phrase was more than descriptive: "It stopped because life takes over."
And I suppose this will be the reality for a lot of labels and musicians who simply had to give up because their passion isn't compatible with their new or more complicated lifestyle.
Isn't this a little sad?

We have to understand that even making a single track with current standards is very complicated. Sounding as good as the biggest names becomes an arduous task. The investment in time and money is substantial and sometimes the reward from the public isn't adequate. Imagine transferring all of this to a label that combines graphic art, printing formats, shipping, mastering, etc.
Which leads you to wonder:
what's the point of all this?

The point has always been the same: sharing what you carry inside with others, which I believe is the most precious and generous action a soul can take.

Calum is a fantastic and surprising musician. He has been in both roles we've described, filling the scene with amazing music for years. This new album, which Calum describes this way, "This record is closer than usual to my older work as Acronym; there's a bit more intentional programming weaved in with the stochastic/deterministic/algorithmic/whatever stuff and finally getting out of equal temperament into 25-edo scales…"
You'll find vibrant melodies and intricate rhythms, as only he knows how, all seasoned with fantastic sound processing.

Middlesbrough Cultural Partnership is taking part in the Big Give – Arts for Impact, an online appeal running until 24 March.

All money raised will help more children and young people access cultural and arts activities.

The partnership is aiming to raise £5,000, and with every £1 donated doubled up to the target, it’s hoped to raise a total of £10,000 to enable more young people to experience the life-changing benefits of creativity.

A fundraising drive will see every pound donated doubled for the benefit of children and young people in Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough Cultural Partnership is taking part in the Big Give – Arts for Impact, an online appeal running until 24 March. All money raised will help more children and young people access cultural and arts activities.

The funding will support costs of entry to a range of cultural activities including gigs, museum activities and holiday music programmes. It will also provide free transport for schoolchildren and community groups to venues, events and exhibitions.

"In the very first year of the doomed 2020s, the Leeds, UK-based art-punk trio Nape Neck made their debut with a self-titled/self-released cassette, featuring eight absolutely visceral tracks that held a mirror up to the anxieties and tensions of our hellish timeline and then shattered it on the ground. The five-song tape that followed it, 2022’s Look Alive, was an even more concise statement of intent, hitting like a head-on collision between the razor-edged clang and clamor of the Ex or Dog Faced Hermans and the untamed neo-no wave jabbing and scrabbling of the Scissor Girls and Erase Errata. This new LP collects all of the material from those two cassettes on vinyl for the first time (deservedly so; better late than never), and every single song is just as thrilling now as it was on first listen — if you weren’t paying attention then, you really need to be now. Bobby Glew’s guitar is strangled Andy Gill-style, splintering the taut, locked-in rhythms from bassist Claire Adams and drummer Kathy Gray with shards of serrated noise. Each member of the band contributes vocals, with their lines crossing and overlapping in a highly coordinated exchange of calls and responses. “No Platforming” and “Paperweight” communicate in a series of desperate shouts and clipped Morse code beats, while clattering mutant funk cowbell punctuates the spiraling scratch of “Demonstrations,” and “Aim Slow” tumbles through a rapid cycle of needling guitar and staccato bass throb, as “Warm Air” and “Look Alive” slash and burn like DNA if they’d been a Ron Johnson band. Once again from the gutter of Roma Est and co-released with My Own Private Records we present ‘Annia’ the second release by NIDO, solo project of poetess Jonida Prifti (J A, Acchiappashpirt), an acute voyage through pulsating bass, spoken poetry, autoharp, synths & vocoder. Co-produced with Hugo Sanchez, ‘Annia’ expands on her previous release ‘Carnica’ with added low thump, slow motion electronics, industrial malaise, haunted chants and if possible an even more stoic approach.

“Dragged by the inner voices that led me to places inhabited by female ghosts, my wandering stopped to perceive what nature wanted to tell me. I listened, capturing what was transmitted to me, through a tunnel full of electric shocks. “Appia Annia Regilla” spoke to me through those shocks and guided me to perceive her story. While I was walking in the “Caffarella” park something inescapable made my body stop in front of the Temple dedicated to her. What fascinates me the most about this album beyond trying to describe it sonically or praise it for the quality of the composition or the techniques used or the intricate patches that have been developed is how amazingly original it is.

If you stop for a moment to try to qualify the style or the form or the concept and you start to try to fit it into one of the thousand aspects of electronic music you will find that it will be difficult to fit it into one.
This is good news because without realizing it we see how there is a large community of musicians who are really taking things further. We owe it not only to the musicians but a large part to the hardware and software developers. Surely Marc & Patrice (Vaag & Poborsk) will agree with me that all the plugins used and hardware are a source of not only incredible inspiration but also of learning, I think we have all learned a lot from the presets and factory configurations.
Another group that is in the shadows and that is contributing to this progress more than we think is the people who make tutorials. I can't believe the great quantity and the great quality of the tutorials in this day and age. They certainly reveal the most secret techniques and give an incredible boost to the whole scene.

I hear in this album how Marc & Patrice develop fascinating and unconventional music. I see how it inspires me and takes me to other places. Their unique way of composing and treating sound surprises me and encourages me to explore the album more. This one it's an album that deserves its time and enhances it in a significant way.

Without a dubt, we have here an amazing musicians.
As always, my deepest thanks for such music.
