** Scorpion Violente** (Avant!, Bruit Direct /Messin (plutôt que Français))

Minimalisme brutal qu’on dirait construit à la pisse de mauvaise bière, synthés malades hurlants et des titres sortis de l’esprit tordu d’une Myriam Badaoui germanisante « Viol et Revanche, 13 ans presque 17, Ubersschleiss, Fugue de Pute Mineure, Strychnine.. »Les affreux cultivent une fosse septique comme terrain de jeu, débordant d’images dérangeantes, de héros de série Z, de faits divers sordides, de misère sociale en arrière-salle de PMU crasseux.
Rejetons indignes de Throbbing Gristle et de Suicide, qui n’étaient déjà pas bien dignes, Scorpion Violente invoque le diable conjointement aux esprits du drone-core, allant jusqu’à éditer 666 exemplaires de « The Rapists » et photographier des prêtresses noires à nichons ptôsiques sur leurs pochettes pour mieux souiller nos yeux en plus de nos oreilles.
En plus d’un sentiment de malaise diffus, on ne sait pas si c’est bien ou mal d’avoir envie de bouger son cul sur ce disco hardcore. On prend le risque.
Avec l’adoubation populaire d’une frange de l’electro qui se rêve, béate, en nouveau mainstream alors qu’elle sert à vendre des t-shirts chinois à des soi-disants branchés qui redoutent de disparaître à la moindre aspérité musicale ou politique, il se trouve qu’à l’Est, la fierté ouvrière décadente n’est pas morte et elle vous chie à la gueule.

**Delacave** (Gloomy Wave / L'Est)

Un duo un gars, une fille. On s'arrête là pour ce qui est mignon. Parce que pour le reste, Delacave nous fait descendre dans sa cave, dans son univers lourd et sombre. « Gloomy Wave » comme ils disent. Et c'est vrai qu'on pense à beaucoup de choses en « wave » en écoutant le magnifique « Run straight to them and grunt » leur dernier album en date, de la no wave du chant au darkwave des synthés avec une pincée de Krautrock. Sombre donc, mais plutôt genre beauté ténébreuse !

Loin de l’idée de prendre le métal sous ses clichés ou d’en faire un métal pour les nuls cette émission exceptionnelle passera du hard au glam du thrash au grunge de la fusion au speed, du neo au power. Les origines du style restent discutées, de Cream à Led Zep (Zeppelin de plomb) aux paroles de Steppenwolf dans Born to be wild « I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder » ce qui donne « J'aime la fumée et la foudre, le tonnerre de métaux lourds ».

A l’instar du jazz, le metal a une étiquette et des sous genres dont il est difficile de se défaire. Tour à tour jugé futile et frivole jusqu'à être accusé de mettre en péril la société et ses bonnes mœurs. AMEN… Et pourtant du jazz /blues au gros son qui tachent, les passerelles existent : De Kirk Hamett et sa passion pour Coltrane, le batteur Dave Lombardo marqué par Tito Puente et Buddy Rich, ou encore Tony Iommi qui a puisé une partie de son jeu de guitare chez Wes Montgommery, Down qui se nourrit des sons du bayou de la Nouvelle-Orléans.

Le metal c’est l’école de la vie mais une vie jouée plus vite plus fort.

I was originally going to have a theme for this mix of 'deep ambience' because it's something I've really got interested in again, but the mix ended up being more a selection of solid favourites, chosen more for having something vaguely interesting to say about them.

Hearing FSOL's Lifeforms album when I was about 19 was a total game changer for me. I think it's the first time that I'd heard an audio environment like that - sound used to create an almost physical world. Even now it sounds utterly extraordinary. That album led me firmly into the world of ambient electronica - the Neutron 9000 remix of Sven Vath was a stone cold classic of it's age. I was working near Soho in London at the time and you had early cyberpunk cafes like Global and Silverfish and Ambient Soho on the corner for the heads. It was a complete lifestyle almost. Whilst clubland in London was getting kind of stoosh at that point, this world felt like mine. That led to DJing and then writing my own tracks and then the internet happened and collectives and Toytronic heard some and that was that. I did an AV project a few years ago using scifi and space imagery and I've thrown one of my soundbeds from that project into the mix here - my attempt at tribute.

08:04 Peter Gabriel - Of These Hope (reprise)

I nearly followed up the Vath with FSOL in their Amorphous Androgenous guise with Fat Cat, but then I thought I'd rather hear the original source for that sample. This is an astonishing piece of work and I think it set the bar for fusion for me. Many attempts to bring together aspects of traditional music (whether that's the western classical traditions which are my grounding in music, or various flavours of world music) with electronic, pop or rock elements end up being horrible - neither one thing nor the other. Squeezing square pegs into round holes or just laying one style over another. Peter Gabriel's work on Passion shows that it's only possible if you understand the forms suitably and exploit their common ground. I'm rarely explicit about the influence of early choral music in my output, but it's totally there in the way harmonies move. You take those elements and then construct something new on the top and that's exactly what Peter Gabriel did here.

Jon Hopkins - Fairytale

Very happy that Jon is getting his due props with his later, more upbeat work. He's the best producer of our generation by a country mile. I've thrown this early piece in though because I think it neatly bridges the gap between the older school ambient and the nu-gen of totally digital producers (Jon's more than that of course, but it's a good place to start). A bit like FSOL, it's the expansiveness of the sound stage which gets me on this and the precision and attention to every single frequency detail. Wish I had that dude's work ethic. The mix bridge here is one of the atmospherics from the Esper edition of Vangelis Blade Runner score. It won't need any introduction, but that soundtrack pretty much sets the tone for the whole of the 90's electronica scene. We all grew up with that vision as our idea of the future and so when we came to attempt to soundtrack it, Vangelis was the basis. Plus he's legitimised fat dudes in electronica which I, for one, am grateful for.

14:33 Global Communication - Epsilon Phase

A complete let yourself get washed away tune. Actually a pretty audacious remix of a Chapterhouse jingle jangle floaty indie tune from back in the day, but a complete deconstruction of it. I love the way that ambient can do that actually. It's like those tracks which slow down pop songs by 1000% to make Eno-esque classics. By the time the vocal comes in on this one you're already on another planet. This one reminds me mostly of my old mate Callum and sitting in fields drifting away. Which leads us nicely to...

22:31 Ulrich Schnauss - Molfsee

Big Chill, 2004. I've just played there with Kirsty Hawkshaw - my first decent festival gig so am on a total buzz. I bump into a promoter mate of mine called John Power who, knowing our shared love of electronica, tells me to make time for this german dude. There's probably a couple of hundred of us there. It's dark. Rum has been drunk. This awkward looking dude is on stage with a laptop and starts playing. What happens then is a total wash of beauty and calm and hope and comfort coming out of the PA. Bliss, nirvana, complete and total harmony and joy. I've seen a lot of gigs that have done that for me to differing degrees but never so completely. I played with him a few years later. Nice guy.

29:32 Maps and Diagrams - Meet me at Slussen

I've known Tim for a while. Dude is prolific and he's normally the best person to embarrass me into pulling my finger out and getting some work done. I love the way his style has shifted so subtly over the last few years. I did an EP for his Cactus Island label and it's still one of my favourite things I ever did. Solid two weeks of inspiration and work...that never happens to me. Anyway, this is taken from, I think, his best album on an obscure Japanese label and it's just wall to wall brilliant.

33:30 Pleq - Someone like comes into your Life

This is taken from the Leaves label compilation I contributed to a couple of years ago. I've done a few things like this and they're really good for energising you back into work. I think they're also perhaps one of the last bastions of community in electronica circles. It's the thing I miss most. The death of the record shop has also been the death of the label as a community touch point. In the Toytronic days (which was basically run out of Sister Ray records in Soho), we were an actual physical community. Smallfish, Ambient Soho, all these places were hubs and that's how people met. Most of my important meetings and serendipitous moments happened in those places. Online communities have been important too (particularly in the early days) but I think the signal to noise ratio is very hard to cut through now and the lack of actual human contact does make natural creative connection difficult. That said, compilations like this probably wouldn't exist without it so it's swings/roundabouts really. Oh, also, this is a tune.

39:00 Seefeel - Air Eyes

Probably the most underrated of the Warp electronica stable, they were massively influential for me, not just musically, but in the idea of electronic music in a band setting which is what I've always tried to work toward. I saw them with about 50 people at a pub in Finsbury Park. Their support act - Boards of Canada. No one ever believes me. Anyway, I love the sense of space in their music - minimalism can be quite busy and they bring it into ambience nicely.

40:29 Plaid - Rakimou

The first time I heard this track was also the first time I'd ever heard electronica being performed live. It was at the Blue Note (also gone now, like most of the best London places) for a Warp Records night in about 1996. I had been upstairs and I walked down into the crowded room, being pulled in by this utter enchantment, this siren song. I couldn't get down to the floor so ended up on the stairs, with Mixmaster Morris in front of me and Bjork behind me, whilst I listened to this utter heaven. One of those 'never forget' moments. Been a massive fan ever since, although I had to temper my listening a bit because 'influence' was in danger of becoming 'pastiche'.

46:03 Bola - VM8

Whenever people ask me who I sound like, Bola is the most accurate answer I can give. There are, obviously, more mainstream touchstones, but Bola's work has always been the closest thing in electronica to the spirit of where I'm coming from. I totally envy his production as well. Not only did he write Forcassa 3 which is somewhere near the top of "tunes I wish I'd written" but every single album he's done has a sheen and polish which astonishes me. I use his tracks as A/B comparisons in mastering sessions.

50:58 Toytronic - Untitled hidden track from Everything is Green

Props to Toytronic. It was a golden age for me and I remain honoured to this day to have contributed to such an awesome label and culture. I wish Martin had hung around more. It was a label that needed a creative force behind it. That said, I'm very glad that they didn't just limp on. I've never wanted to self-release my music. It's both a privilege and a responsibility to put your work out with a peer group in that way, and the way that Martin, Chris and the rest of the crew curated every aspect of that label was inspiring. I definitely wouldn't have had the opportunity to still be here now if I hadn't had that early mentorship.

51:51 Loscil - The Making of Grief Point

I'm straight up obsessed with this. I think it's pretty much perfection and it resonates with me through every pore. Musically it's as beautiful as anything Loscil has written, but the voice over man - look it's a ballsy move doing spoken word anyway, it rarely works. My ex is a poet and I've often toyed with having recited sections of her work over tracks but it just sounds mawkish when I attempt it. Maybe there's something about that Canadian accent ("super-true to the genre"). This track so beautifully captures the inner dialogue of the record-making process. The fear and self-doubt that pervades is like an unstoppable force. I've nearly finished my new album and the entire process has been terrifying. Like therapy. Gone is the effortless way I used to just make music and everything now is subject to doubt, to self-analysis, to existential angst - a constant barrage of "is this good enough"? And the final beat of this track: "It is done". Perfect. I've actually printed out "The world does not like me grim - it likes me melancholy but not miserable" for my studio wall. It's something I need to remember.

Sonic Protest, 10ème édition, du 4 au 13 avril 2014 !

Depuis sa création le festival s’intéresse aux outsiders, aux artistes rares, aux expérimentations sonores et aux formes plastiques qui y sont associées. Cette année, à l’occasion de sa dixième édition du 4 au 13 avril, le festival invite versant musique, entre autres, Merzbow, Terminal Cheesecake ou encore Lee Ranaldo et Thurston Moore. En tous dix soirées sont organisées à Paris et Montreuil, mais aussi dans quatorze autres villes de France et d’Europe avec dix-sept soirées Sonic Protest hors-les-murs !

Côté art visuel, dans la continuité des éditions précédentes (Lucas Abela « Vinyle Rally » au Palais de Tokyo, Nick Blinko dans le cadre de Hey ! à la Halle Saint-Pierre), Sonic Protest investit la Générale pendant dix jours avec l’exposition Let’s get physical : des installations sonores de Xavier Charles, Jean-François Laporte et Arnaud Paquotte, avec des conférences (Andy Bolus, Harold Schellinx, Emmanuel Ferrand), restitutions d’ateliers et performances.

En écho à la thématique de la physicalité du son, Let’s get physical se concluera avec la création d’une station de télévision artistique de proximité, montée par un collectif d’artistes multimédias (RYBN, Flo Kauffmann et Nicolas Mongertmont) où public et artistes sont invités à créer leurs programmes.

C’était le quatrième rendez-vous du Ego Twister radio show, et il était consacré presque exclusivement au label anglais ADAADAT (sauf à la fin, où j’ai diffusé un long morceau métal-doom-tromboné du groupe Bagarre Générale, dont l’étonnant album était sorti sur Radar Swarm).

ADAADAT fut fondé à Londres en 2003 par Angus Keith et Bjørn Hatleskog, lui-même musicien sous le nom de Romvelope. De la chiptune au breakcore, avec des incursion rock-pop arty (Agaskodo Teliverek) ou encore grindcore electronique (Cutting Pink with Knives), ADAADAT propose un catalogue aussi radical qu’éclectique riche de 32 références.

1.A Child's Garden Of Grass "The History Of Marijuana"
A cult stoner comedy record from the 70’s. This almost never leaves my record box, especially when playing ambient parties. Chock full of great comedy samples and sound fx. This record stands the test of time and has great artwork. I always buy a copy when I see it. It's been plundered to death,but I love it. MEDITATION!
 
 
2.Tontos Expanding Head Band "Riversong" 
This is my favorite track from Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil. A moody psychedelic piece that is great for early morning chill-out sets. These guys were  cutting edge ,and their weird sounds made it into the consciousness of the mainstream(via Stevie Wonder). With their analog instrument T.O.N.T.O. (the original new timbral orchestra) they would change the face of music forever. The synth can be seen in the Brian De Palma movie “Phantom of the Paradise”. DIG IT (1:10)
 
 
3.Alice Coltrane "Journey In Satchidananda"
I think this was my first introduction to "spiritual" jazz and probably my favorite. A beautiful track , I was hooked from the sound of that first bass note, but when that harp comes in DIVINITY.(5:00)
 
 
4.Steve Roach "Reflections In Suspension"
One of my favorite beatless ambient albums. A true work of art, and a piece I come back to over and over. Steve Roach has a lot of great ambient records, but this one is my favorite. The genius is in the simplicity.  Great for rainy days and Sundays. BLISS OUT (10:22)

5.KLF/The Orb "Space"
Where would I be without the KLF? The KLF along with The Orb are two very important sample based bands to come out of the uk's electronic music scene. Their work has helped shape me as an artist and a dj. A few months ago I was lucky enough to open for "The Orb" on their recent tour in San Francisco. At the show Alex Paterson gave me a cd of The KLF "Space" album,but with "The Orb"samples(that were removed for the official KLF "Space" release)still in it. It was such a nice gift and surprise.The original release always sounded a bit incomplete to me, so it was nice to finally get to hear it as it was originally intended.The circle was now complete.MUMU! 6.Horacio Jorge Beca "Poema Por La Noche"
An argentine poetry record I picked up at a thrift store. My father is from Argentina, so I had to buy this. Spoken word lp’s sound great in Spanish. Have never seen this record anywhere again. PHENOMENO(19:04)
 
7.Harold Budd "The Wanderer"
One of the first “ambient” records I had ever heard. This was in my oldest brothers cd collection. I’d often pick out music from his collection and mix them on an old radio shack mixer, recorded all to tape. This track appeared in one of my earliest dj mixes.AMBIENT!(19:18)
 
8. Leon Thomas "The Creator Has A Master Plan"
Love this track. It is really uplifting to me ,just a beautiful song. This leon Thomas version is my favorite.THAT YODEL!(22:45)
 
9.Raymond Scott "Hostess Twinkies"
The great musician and innovator! This twinkie ad is one of the funnest of the Raymond Scott jingles .Played this at a party once, and brought boxes of twinkies to be passed out when I played it. TWINKIES!!(26:58)
 
10.Bruce Haack "Word Game"
Bruce Haack is one of my favorite artists of all time. He was so under appreciated when he was alive and making music. I’m glad to see he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. He made really weird records. “The Electric Lucifer” (where this track is from) is probably the strangest of the lot. Oddly enough, it was this record that was released on a major label (thanks to his friend and manager the great Chris Kachulis). There are three records in”The Electric Lucifer” trilogy. I was lucky enough to work on the third installment in the series with my project “The Sound capsule”. All three of "The Electric Lucifer" albums can be found online.LONG LIVE HAACK(27:11)

11.Rei Harakami "Owari No Kisetsu"
Introduced to me by the amazing Mixmaster Morris. I instantly fell in love with his music, emotive and with a very unique sound. I have never heard anything like it before.
He passed away in 2011. RIP REI(31:00)

12. Thomas Fehlmann "Seerosengiessen"
The amazing Thomas Fehlmann! His body of work speaks for itself. His solo work and his work with bands like "The Orb" and "Sun Electric" have all been top notch. He is a class act to boot. Fehlmann once told me that "Seerosen giessen" means LILY PADS!(34:10)

13.Vangelis "Dawn"
Another artist my brother introduced me to. This is probably the first album I heard by Vangelis. The synth sounds that Vangelis produced are like no other, and this is no exception. Perfect for driving in a city scape.DAWN!!(38:20)

14. The Hellers "The Mist Of Time"
Fantastico! funny voiceovers,jingles,crazy game show music, and a song about the weather in san francisco? what's not to like?

15.Eden Ahbez "La Mar"
A long haired hippie in the 1940's who camped out by the Hollywood sign,wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole and made amazing exotica. EDEN!(44:48)

16.The Doors "End Of The Night"
A seminal track in my childhood.The way you hear the track here in this mix is how the doors music is represented in my life.A kind of bench mark of experimentation. The Doors really were a pathway for me. JIM!!(47:19)

17.Dreamies "Program 10"

18.Arthur Russell "That's Us/Wild Combination"
An amazing artist who spanned across so many genres that it's hard to believe it's all him. He seemed like such a gentle soul. There are so many great arthur russell tracks, it's hard to pick just one. But this one holds a very warm place in my heart. Listened to this on a roadtrip with my family in argentina, I'll never forget it. "we're leaving at five in the morning, we could get better mileage". LET'S GO SWIMMING ARTHUR!!(53:53)

19.The Rotary Connection "Magical World"
"I live in a magical world" we all do, don't we? well when Minnie sings it, I want to believe it. The Charles Stepney orchestration and minis dream like voice and psychedelic lyrics makes this one of those tracks I always will come back to. A good way to close out a dj set too. Minnie!(60:49)

2001-2014: treize ans de drum’n’bass, breakcore, dubstep et electronica. Le label berlinois Ad Noiseam revient à Paris fêter son anniversaire.

► DJ Hidden (Ad Noiseam, Genosha / NL)
Drum’n’Bass, Hardcore
DJ Hidden n'a plus besoin d'être présenté : après quinze ans de productions drum'n'bass et hardcore, ce musicien hollandais est devenu l’un des noms les plus respectés de la scène électronique dure et underground. Que ce soit en solo, au sein de The Outside Agency ou avec son projet ambient Semiomime, Noël Wessels a redéfini tous les genres qu'il a touché, son nom devenant synonyme de productions lêchées, inventives et très professionnelles. Son dernier album, « Enclosed », paru sur Ad Noiseam fin 2013, est la parfaite synthèse des styles et influences de cet incontournable de la musique électronique moderne.

► Dean Rodell (Subsistenz, Ad Noiseam / DE)
Drum’n’Bass
En plus de diriger son propre label (Subsistenz, qui a aussi publié des disques de The Sect ou Current Value), Dean Rodell gêre le Subland, un des clubs « bass music » les plus importants de Berlin, et est à l'origine du festival annuel Burn The Machine (co-­organisé avec Ad Noiseam). Dans Machine Code, Dean Rodell collabore avec Current Value un projet formé autour du respect de la véritable drum'n'bass et de ses origines techno. Ces deux musiciens, bien connus dans leurs scènes respectives, s'allient dans un projet qui est reconnu comme l'un des plus modernes et innovants de la drum'n'bass actuelle.

► Gore Tech (Ad Noiseam, Peace Off / UK)
Breakcore
Avec une poignée de disques publiés par la crême des labels du genre (Ad Noiseam bien­sûr, mais aussi Peace Off et Murder Channel), le jeune Gore Tech s'est vite imposé comme un des nouveaux espoirs du breakcore : avec lui ce genre est de retour, plus moderne et plus cassé que jamais. L'enfant « bâtard » du hardcore, de la drum and bass et du punk revient avec des techniques novatrices. Alors qu'il travaille en ce moment à un nouvel album, il est toujours temps de se replonger dans « Machine Throne », son dernier EP, paru chez Ad Noiseam, et qui est vite devenu un classique du genre.

► Monolog (Ad Noiseam / DK)
Electronica, Drum’n’Bass
Loin des conventionnalités, le danois Monolog brise les cloisons entre les styles, en commençant dès les années 90 par allier sa guitare jazz à des groupes de métal. Cette combinaison donnera une touche particulière à son projet electronique, né lors de son déménagement à Berlin au début des années 2000. En octobre 2012 l'artiste berlinois revient sur une forme plus dure, plus intense et plus directe dans son album « 2 Dots Left » : treize tracks gorgés de contrastes drum’n’bass vous y attendent, pas de doute il s'agit d'un art percutant qui atteint les extrémités musicales, techniques et émotionnelles.

► Nicolas Chevreux (Ad Noiseam / DE)
Underground Bass Music
Créateur du label Ad Noiseam, Nicolas Chevreux passe aussi derrière les machines pour s'adonner à ce qu'il préfère : un son breaké et propulsé. Dans ses sets, il libére les styles, promeut l'originalité et se laisse guider par sa passion : la musique expérimentale et underground. Défenseur actif de la bass music, il lance cette année une mini tournée autour des 13 ans du label. Paris, Montpellier et Bordeaux ont le plaisir de recevoir la team berlinoise pour fêter la 13ème année d'une aventure qui est loin de s'arrêter !

C'est en 1992, en pleine période rave, que David a commencé à mixer, écumant dès lors les évènements en tant que DJ pendant plus de 10 ans. En 2003 il se met à expérimenter les machines analogiques, abandonnant les dj sets pour se focaliser sur la production de titres et de live acts. Avec son nouveau projet Defect Data, il propose une IDM racée qui s'est matérialisée l'été dernier sur son premier album, I told my Therapist About You, sorti sur Freakbitch Music. Il nous fera l’honneur de sa première date à Paris !

Intelligent Bass Music
2methylBulbe1ol fait partie de la vague underground de l'IDM / Bass Music française depuis 2008. Passé par le Post-Hardcore et le Grindcore, c’est la découverte de Venetian Snares et Xanopticon qui lui ouvre de nouveaux horizons. Il utilise la musique comme une sorte de narration, et emmène le dancefloor dans d’inquiétants paysages cyberpunks mêlant basses vibrantes et rythmiques agressives prenantes. Après des sorties sur Peace Off, Tympanik Audio ou Jarring Effects, il vient de sortir son nouvel EP, Orb, sur Ad Noiseam.

► The HUNT (Giallo Disco / FR)
Horror Synth Disco
Eternellement désabusés de ne pas voir se concrétiser un futur tel qu’il est décrit dans l’imaginaire des années 80, les membres du projet « The Hunt » tentent, grâce à leur univers sonore, de retranscrire un présent tel qu’ils l’auraient aimé : obscur, pollué, où seul le battement froid et numérique des maitresses-machines affronte cyberpunks et renégats anarchistes. Pour cela, le duo utilise tous les artifices musicaux filmographiques du genre : nappes sombres et profondes, basses tranchantes et arpèges démoniaques. Un tout auquel viennent se rallier des rythmiques électroniques lourdes et compressées.

Tous ces freaks à démangeaison variable s’époumonent joyeusement sous le regard d’un Ferrara, développant sa pellicule dans un bain d’acide. Membre fondateur de Headwar, collectif à géométrie variable mais à la puissance sonore constante, Nicolas Belvalette est un musicien prolifique mais pas bavard. Activiste de la scène DIY d'Amiens (l'Accueil Froid, Label Brique), on le retrouve dans divers projets coloré wave-punk comme Les Morts Vont Bien, Sultan Solitude ou Usé où il officie en solo. Saturations diverses, valorisation de déchets sonores recyclés, épuisement d'idées "pauvres". Debussy, des arméniens dans un bus, des chanteuses mortes. L'opérateur du son donne le signe de départ à l'orchestre. Des mélodies entêtantes, quelques petites chansons hurlées aussi. Et du violon-singe, pour faire pittoresque.
