Après 10 ans d’expositions surprenantes, de portes ouvertes conviviales, d’évènements décoiffants, la Gare XP frôle la crise
de nerfs face à l'attente de la reprise de son activité.

En septembre dernier, un déménagement rocambolesque nous a conduit de la Caserne de Reuilly à la Porte des Lilas.
Dûment munis d’une nouvelle convention d’occupation précaire signée avec la ville de Paris sur le site charmant des Archives, nous avons pris possession… D’un quasi non-lieu, la majeure partie restant inaccessible pour cause d’amiante et autres insalubres joyeusetés.

Heureusement, la fin des travaux est prévue pour .... Décembre 2015. Comment ça ils n’ont pas commencé ? Ah oui, le provisoire qui dure !

Alors les Portes Fermées (ou Vertes), c’est quoi ?
C’est la libération de toute la frustration accumulée par les artistes de la Gare XP lors de 2 jours de vengeance festive dans notre chouette jardin. Parce qu’on ne va pas s’enfermer sur cette note négative et s’éteindre lentement.

Parce que la Gare Expérimentale est un collectif qui peut vivre malgré tout ; tant qu’il nous reste.... le barbecue, les enceintes et les bombes !!! ....... (de peinture bien sûr !)

En attendant, soyez nombreux à nous rejoindre les samedi 9 et dimanche 10 avril lors des portes fermées (ou vertes), pour un moment d’exultation collective avec un petit air de sortie à la campagne.

Après La Belleviloise en août dernier, la compagnie musicale Alcôme réitère ses « Siestes acousmatiques »!
C’est entouré d’une trentaine de haut-parleurs que l’auditeur est invité à une rêverie sonore singulière. Vous pourrez y découvrir une programmation éclectique d’une durée de huit heures! Bien assez de temps pour osciller entre écoutes attentives et écoutes détendues, allongé ou assis confortablement puis se désaltérer ou se restaurer avant de replonger dans l’univers sonore riche en couleur de la musique acousmatqiue!
Sorte de cinéma pour l’oreille, l’acousmatique est une musique de sons enregistrés, composée en studio et jouée en direct par un interprète aux commandes de l’acousmonium, l’orchestre de haut-parleurs.
La programmation transportera l’auditeur dans l’univers de 21 compositeurs.

Alcôme
[Armando & Livia - Composition et Organisation en Musique Électroacoustique]
Fondée en 2013 par Livia Giovaninetti et Armando Balice, Alcôme est une compagnie indépendante dédiée à la création artistique et musicale.
Alcôme se donne pour missions d’organiser et d’interpréter des concerts de musique électroacoustique, de concevoir, de coordonner et d’assurer la direction artistique de projets de création collectifs. Alcôme défend la place de l'interprète dans la musique acousmatique notamment à travers son collectif de compositeurs et d'interprètes constitué par Armando Balice, Livia Giovaninetti, Paul Ramage, Maylis Raynal et d'interprètes invités.
Visant à créer du lien et renforcer le réseau entre les jeunes compositeurs d’aujourd’hui, Alcôme développe son activité autour du partage et de l’ouverture. Ses créations ont été programmées dans divers festivals en France (Futura, Détours de Babel, Pieds Nus, L’Hiver Musical) et à l’étranger (Festival 5 Giornate à Milan, Festival Sirga en Catalogne).
La compagnie dispose de son propre dispositif mobile, l’acousmonium Alcôme (un orchestre de plus de 30 haut-parleurs), qui lui permet d’assurer concerts et performances.
A travers les nombreux projets pédagogiques déjà réalisés, Alcôme souhaite être au coeur de la transmission afin de faire découvrir et sensibiliser le jeune public à cette musique.

I came to Morocco in 2012 as the tour manager of Blitz The Ambassador, who back then was playing at Mawazine Festival in Rabat. It was the last date of the festival tour so I ended up staying a bit longer, adding some extra days in the rough yet beautiful city of Casablanca. In the 1960s and 1970s the city used to be the central hub for the Morroccan musical scene and recording industry with more than a dozen labels releasing a wide range of music.

Strolling through the city in 2012 I ended up in a particularly rundown part of the medina. I took a couple of side streets and found myself in front of a tiny shop that was over and over filled with broken electronic devices. I would have nearly passed it unnoticed until I realized that behind the electronics trash were piles of dead stock records. It turned out the owner of the store used to run a record label himself in the 1970s and sometime in the 80s his business shifted towards electronics after cassette tapes took over the market. It took me nearly a day to go thru the piles of records of mostly 7“s I had never seen before. There was one record in particular that caught my attention. It was by a band called „Fadaul et les Privileges“ and mentioned James Brown in the writing credits of the song „Sid Redad“ on the a-side. Needless to say my expectations were high. The first time I heard the record I was blown away. A cover of James Brown’s „Papa got a brand new bag“ sung in arabic and backed by a rawly recorded three piece band. It’s hard to describe the music without having listened to it, but as time went by I somehow ended up summarizing it as Arabic funk played with a punk attitude. A description, that I feel, comes fairly close. Soon I became obsessed by the record but nobody seemed to know anything about the vinyl or the artists, even google didn’t help. A true gem forgotten about through the passages of time. I kept on traveling to Morocco trying to find infos about the artists, which did not end up being fruitful during the first couple of trips. What kept me going was the fact that over the course of the next years I kept on finding different records by Fadoul, in the end a total of four. They all had the raw sound aesthetic of „Sid Redad“. Energetic performances, a mighty voice and a very lively atmosphere that was preserved in the recordings.

It took me until 2014 to find first infos about Fadoul and the news I got through members of another Moroccan band called the Golden Hands. They told me that Fadoul had passed away a long time ago. As sad as it was to hear this, it was the start of a hunt that started with a phone call to another Morroccan singer called Tony Day who knew where Fadoul’s family used to live in the 1980s. Another trip to Morocco, countless taxi rides, and numerous phone calls and street conversations later we were standing in front of the house of Fadoul’s family in central Casablanca. We ended up meeting one of his sisters who shared beautiful stories with us about her brothers life. A creative spirit who painted, played theatre and eventually ended up dedicating most of his energy to music. He spent some time living in Paris soaking up the music of James Brown, Free and other American bands, laying the foundation of his unique mix of arabic and western musical influences. After his recording career he kept on making music in the 1980s, exploring new musical grounds. One of the jingles of a big Moroccan orange juice brand is composed by him. He got married and had two children. Fadoul passed 1991 in Casablanca at the age of 50.

Needless to say it sitting in the living room of Fadoul’s family was an emotional moment for for all of us. For his sister and family who would have never thought that Fadoul’s music gained this much attention outside of Morocco and who hadn’t heard his music for 30 years due to the absence of a record player in the house. And obviously also for me as the 3 year search came to an end. I was more than happy that they loved the idea to re-release Fadoul’s music. So here we are: "Azmanah Sa'Ib (Time Is Hard)“, Fadoul’s first LP 45 years after his music was originally released.

Join Brian as he celebrates the first-ever New York visit of renowned experimental Romanian composers Iancu Dumitrescu and his wife Ana-Maria Avram, with a two hour special from 4-6pm. He'll be showcasing their amazing recordings through the years, and host an exclusive interview with them at WFMU's studios while in town to present their music at Columbia University's Miller Theater March 1-5. Pairing learned concepts of Phenomenology with Acousmatic-leaning composition, Dumitrescu led the charge in outlining a new objectivity over purely academic approach to the creation of music. He and Ana-Maria both share the philosophies of being Spectralist composers, utilizing sonographic and mathematic data visuals as decision-making elements in sound with acoustic, electronic, and tape sources; it's something touched on by the likes of Varese and Xenakis in the past, made prominent by the French, but never done as uniquely-stylized as with them. They've influenced many avant composers in recent decades, and even legions of Noise kids with their detailed attention to finely-crafted chaos. Tune in for heavy sounds and discussion on the essence of music with two major innovators.

Since their inception, Gnod’s musical trajectory has been one of constant fluctuation borne out of an incessant need to discover new sonic worlds. Beginning life as a shamanic drone ensemble, at times fitting up to 15 members on stage, these early rituals informed the core ideals that have come to define the group in their years of activity; community and trance-inducing repetition. Throughout a discography that has amassed dozens of CD-R’s, cassettes and vinyls for labels like Rocket Recordings, Trensmat, Krokodilo (Blackest Ever Black) and their own Tesla Tapes imprint, a restless yet organic need mutate their music into new realms has had critics clawing for comparative touch stones. Acts as far ranging as Hawkwind, Popul Vuh, Pan Sonic, Sunburned Hand of the Man and Pharaoh Sanders have all been referenced in attempt to pinpoint their output, one that has historically never aped any genre but with each record furthered their own unique place in truly independent music. It is the exact same dedication to the live arena that has seen Gnod become one of the most celebrated live bands in the UK and secured them multiple tours and festival appearances throughout Europe. In these times of cash in hand ‘glory days’ reunions and bands simply rehashing their recorded material pitch perfect live, Gnod are a stark and welcome anomaly. Already moving on from the barley released and universally acclaimed epic ‘Infinity Machines’, the current live incarnation of the band is characterised by a crushing, cataclysmic new protest music whose call to arms gravitas offers a meaningful defiance to Cameron’s Austerity Britain. Gnod have taken their very namesake and charged it with bludgeoning new edge that is as euphoric as it is nihilistic. It is one that stridently attests to the group’s spiritual center, one of community that is inclusive and respectful of its audience yet will never placate to their expectations. Instead, Gnod offer a gateway to an aural black hole and along with firm guiding hand, the opportunity to dive head and body first into a powerfully new psychedelic maelstrom full of possibilities.

Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Throbbing Gristle' (1982), 'RE/Search #6/7: Industrial Culture Handbook' (1983), 'RE/Search #10: Incredibly Strange Films' (1986), 'RE/Search #12: Modern Primitives' (1989) et 'Modern Pagans' (2001).

*Un fanzine sera édité par RE/Search Publications à cette occasion, proposant les entretiens avec les différents artistes du documentaire Artists of the Industrial Scene. Édition bilingue (anglais / français) disponible gratuitement pour les cinquante premières préventes !

Cut-ups, analog tape loops, celluloid and fire, William S. Burroughs, Kurt Kren, performance art, direct animation… autant d'éléments que l’on retrouve dans les films expérimentaux de Marian Wallace.

La culture visuelle des musiques industrielles fonctionne dès le milieu des années 1970 comme une plateforme d’échange entre les arts (graphisme, musique, performance, vidéo). Certains groupes de musique industrielle, des performers et des musiciens, s’approprient les pratiques du cut-up et du sampling afin d’intégrer des éléments subliminaux et bruitistes dans leurs productions (musique, film et vidéo). Les productions et concerts de ces artistes constituent une forme d’humour noir, documenté par le fanzine 'Industrial Culture Handbook', publié par RE/Search. Le documentaire Artists of the Industrial Scene de Marian Wallace interroge ce mouvement, présenté par V. Vale et par une série d’entretiens avec Mark Pauline (SRL), Johanna Went (artiste de la performance), Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle et Psychic TV), Jerry Casale (DEVO) et d'autres artistes de la même scène, témoignant d’une culture visuelle foisonnante. Ce court-métrage (51 min) sera accompagné de films expérimentaux des années 1970 à nos jours, conçus par Marian Wallace avec une pratique artistique singulière (altération du film, sons expérimentaux, récit décalé).

About the program:

Cut-ups, analog tape loops, celluloid and fire. W.S. Burroughs and Kurt Kren. Performance art and direct animation. These are all part of the experimental films of Marian Wallace.

In the 1970s, before today's global Noise-Music bands and festivals, a few avant-garde artists and groups began using the cut-up, sampling, subliminals, noise, musique concrète, films and video and more to provide immersive Black Humor concert experiences; documented in RE/Search's Industrial Culture Handbook. Marian Wallace's "Artists of the Industrial Scene" starts with an introduction by V. Vale and includes interviews with Mark Pauline (SRL), Johanna Went (Performance Artist), Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV), Jerry Casale (DEVO) and other ground-breaking punk/industrial/per¬formance musicians and artists. This short-feature (51 min) is surrounded by experimental films from then and now, which utilize physical celluloid-altering, unorthodox analog audio techniques, offbeat narrative, and documentation of interesting and unique events and places.

Marian Wallace and V. Vale (founder of Search & Destroy and RE/Search) will appear in person for a Q&A at the end of the program.

THE SOURCE of his musical identity plays THE MESSAGE of synths, broken organs, harpsichord (!), double bass, horns, cymbals and crispy drum machines. It's a SPACETIME REVERIE, where TSUBURAYA blows LEAVES FOR GAMERA while HE WHO SPEAKS THROUGH PYRAMIDS walks through ECHOVILLE with DUST on his shoes, contemplating the BIRTH OF ALPHA after THE BIG SLEEP. While humming to songs of the second moon, the HARPSICHORD AUTOMATA leads THE MARCH OF THE THINKING MACHINES to a blissful silver big bang.

"Entre rétro-futur et post-modernité, les virtuoses de Scarlatti Goes Electro reviennent avec deux esercizi consacrés l’un à Chopin, l’autre à Gainsbourg. Folie dadaïste et rigueur métronomique au rendez-vous : l’hommage électronique est respectueux et irrévérent.
Pour commencer allegretto, switched-on Chopin : L’Étude Op. 25 se propulse à des vitesses supraluminiques, et laisse furtivement entrevoir des miniatures aux détails ciselés. Riche de sonorités brillantes et abrasives, cette réorchestration s’équilibre entre fantaisie et dextérité : où la musique savante est sublimée par la déviance pop.
Quant à la reprise de ballade gainsbourgienne qui orne la face B, elle semble extraite d’un péplum intergalactique tourné dans un tunnel d’accélération : yodels lysergiques, eurodance métissée de spleen amoureux, envolées dance nappées de violon. L’épopée flamboyante cache en fait un tube démoniaque.
Deux opus à l’éclat stellaire, tels des yeux lançant des éclairs, qui ne pouvait trouver meilleur écrin que le microlabel The Brain Records. Allegro? Si si...Ma troppo !"
