Brooklyn's psychedelic tropical and surf-cumbia act Chicha Libre are specialized in deviant covers since their very first album Sonido Amazonico. They've just released a fantastic new album called Canibalismo with a similar spicy recipe. In that respect they belong to the great chicha (Peru's own version of the cumbia) fusion's tradition with elements of literally every kind of existing music: funk, pop, rock, French variétés, krautrock, classical music, etc. In 2007 and 2010 Chicha Libre leader and Barbès Records owner Olivier Conan released two must-have compilations (The Roots of Chicha & The Roots Of Chicha 2), revealing this hidden latin genre to the astonished eyes of the world. That's why Olivier was a perfect match for a cumbia and latin Molesting Laura guest mix after the great interview we've just done with him.
